Welcome to the memorial page for

Emily Chaffin

November 22, 1926 ~ November 18, 2014 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Dorothy Emily Dickey Chaffin was born on November 22, 1923, in Charleston, SC to William B. Dickey and Ruby Wells Dickey.  She was the youngest of three children.  She married Harry P. Chaffin on May 28, 1943. They have four children: Harry, Jr. and his wife Carol of Snellville, GA; Carol Ramsey and her husband Butch of Raleigh, NC; Ed and his wife Eva of St. Louis, MO; and Randy of Stockbridge, GA, as well as a former daughter-in-law Melissa Barton of Gainesville, GA.  She has 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Answering the call to ministry, her husband attended Mercer University and Southeastern Theological Seminary.  She served faithfully as a pastor’s wife, mostly in the Charleston area, during their marriage.

A gifted musician, Emily played the piano, organ, sang solos, taught piano, as well as directed church choirs and left a legacy of musical ability to her children and grandchildren.  Being an accomplished Bible teacher, she taught many Sunday school classes throughout the years. She served as president of the Charleston Baptist Association of Women’s Missionary Union for multiple terms and was in demand as a speaker. Along with her husband, she started a Christian school at Central Avenue Baptist Church in Summerville, SC, where she served as principal.

Emily and her husband enjoyed traveling, taking many trips in their RV touring the United States. A major highlight of their excursions was traveling the Alaskan Highway. Her hobbies were reading, working crossword puzzles, and cross stitch.    She was known for her excellent cooking, especially her cakes that she shared with others.  She could cook anything from southern country style to gourmet.

Emily moved to Lanier Village Estates in 2002, where she endeared herself to many people and made lots of wonderful friends.  Emily resided in Village West Apartment #1413 before transitioning to OakBridge Terrace (#227), and in due course to WillowBrooke Court for skilled nursing care.  She passed away in WillowBrooke Court on November 18, 2014, just four days before her 91st birthday.

A Memorial Service for Emily will be held on Friday, November 28th at 10:30 a.m. in the Lanier Village Chapel.  Memorial gifts may be given to the LVE Employee Gift Fund in Emily Chaffin’s name.
