Heyward Donald Thurmond

Mr. Heyward Thurmond age 87 of Gainesville, Ga. died Saturday January 13, 2018 in White County, Ga.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm Monday January 15, 2018 at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Baker officiating, burial will follow in the church cemetery and the family will receive friends Sunday night from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America 322 8th ave., Suite 800, New York, New York 10001.

Mr. Thurmond was a native and lifetime resident of Hall county, graduated from Lyman High School, joined the Army in 1952, where he served as a Cryptographic Specialist working with the National Security Agency and the Army Security Agency during the Cold War. He served in several countries and states as well as completing a tour in Vietnam and also in Korea. Mr. Thurmond was also a proud member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Mary Inez Thurmond, Parents, Jessie & Manley Thurmond and a sister, Martha Martin.

Survivors include: 

daughter and son in law - Andrea & Bob Branch of Murrayville

son and daughter in law - Tim & Anita Thurmond of Gainesville

sister - Betty Jean Kendall

sisters and Brothers in law, Glenda & Herman Pass, Doris & Raleigh Parks, Barbara & Russell Freeman

brother and sister in law - Randall & Wanda Thurmond

grandchildren - Jennifer Farrell, Mandy Mathis, Justin Branch, Andy Thurmond and Cassie Thurmond

great grandchildren - Luke, Eden and Kate Farrell

as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
