Dear Ann and Gruhn and Ash families,
I remember Mrs. Gruhn with great affection and respect and send you my family's sympathy on this tremendous loss. We were sitting in English class with Mr. Collier when the principal came on the microphone the afternoon of Nov. 22, 1963 and told us that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. Then the bell rang, and just about in silence, we changed classes, pretty much on autopilot.

It was a great blessing that I went to Mrs. Gruhn's PE class then. We dressed out, as I recall so many years later,I guess because that's what we always did. And then we sat on the bleachers in those one-piece blue jumpsuits, and Mrs. Gruhn spoke to us in steady, soothing words. I wish I remember what she said, but I do remember what she did. She kept us calm, she made the center hold, and – when the principal announced that the president had died and we were all going to go home, so we changed back into our school clothes – she hugged us each as we left. She was my teacher all the way through GHS, and mostly her classes were busy and happy, but my clearest memory is of what a rock and source of caring she was on that quiet, staggering day.

She made a significant different in so many lives. May her memory be a blessing.

Very sorry to learn about Jean's passing. She was a wonderful lady and had a positive impact on so many people. She was my tennis coach at GHS in the late 1970s and she was always supportive and encouraging. She also demanded that we give every match our best effort. Condolences to the Gruhn family.

The Gruhn family defined GHS in every wonderful way imaginable. Seeing Mrs Gruhn years later supporting her son as Coach was always more than wonderful. Legacy seems to be too small of a statement about Coach Gruhn and Mrs Gruhn. To me "Gruhn's Rock" is more than fitting...there's only ONE...Tim Pethel

Mrs. Jean Ash Gruhn was my physical education teacher at Gainesville High School during the 1954-55 year. I graduated in 1955. I will always remember her beautiful smile and kind personality. It was a joy and privilege to be in her class. My grandson played football on the Bobby Gruhn Field and graduated at GHS in 2016. My granddaughter is a senior this year and plays volleyball. Their father and my son-in law Randy Roys is teaching math and coaching volleyball there.

So sorry for the loss for Mrs. Gruhn's family and so sorry for the loss for all the rest of us that knew her and Coach Gruhn. I consider both to be Icons of Gainesville High School. Being a male, I never had Mrs. Gruhn as a teacher but her influence was known and felt by us all and I personally have always had great admiration for her.
God Bless the family

Miss Ash was single when she was our P E teacher when the class of '62 entered the "new" high school our freshman year. She was our cheerleader sponsor our Senior year and she and Coach Gruhn married after our class finished at GHS. Both were loved and admired by our classmates. They were a great team and a wonderful example to so many of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The loss of a cherished loved one is the most devastating experiences a family can face. At times, the loss may seem unbearable. Please know that there are family and friends who care and more importantly Psalm 34:18 tells us that "God is near to those that are broken at heart. He is the God of all comfort. God will comfort you during this difficult time of grief. Our prayers are also with you and your family.

TO THE GRUHN FAMILY:
I am so sorry to hear of Jean's passing. She always had a smile on her face and I always enjoyed talking to her. I either saw her at Church or in school when we both were there a long time ago. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers at this time.
