To the family and friends of Shaw Carter, while I don't know the family personally, I wanted to express my deep condolences for the loss of your loved one. I pray that these thoughts from the Holy Bible brings you comfort. Ezekiel 18: 32 says “‘I do not take any pleasure in the death of anyone,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.’” This scripture helps to appreciate that it pains God when we die. That's why he promises a resurrection when his son Jesus Christ said in John 5:28,29  "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out...".
I pray that your faith in God and his promises continue to bring you comfort. Continue to learn the truth about God and look forward to the promises he has made to you.
Visit jw.org for more comforting scriptures.

Our son, Ian, was camper in cabin B3 at camp Independence this summer with Shaw as one of his cabin leaders. Ian said Shaw had a great sense of humor and was a good counselor; always looking out for cabin B3 boys. We are so grateful for Shaw's leadership and service this summer as a cabin counselor and mentor to organ transplanted youth. Our family is praying for your family at this time.

This summer I was a day helper at Camp Independence. While I was happy to be returning for my 14th summer at Camp Independence, I was sort of sad that I was not going to be a cabin counselor. Regardless, I wasn’t going to let my disappointment tarnish what was going to be a great week of camp. When I got to camp was the first time I met Shaw. From the second I met Shaw, I knew that Cabin 21 would be in good hands. Shaw was one of those counselors that set an example of leadership to the other counselors and volunteers. While I was impressed with Shaw’s leadership abilities, what impressed me the most was the love he showed for all the campers. Shaw treated the campers as if they were his own children. It didn’t matter what happened during the day at camp, Shaw never quit and he never lost his drive to be the best counselor he could be.

Growing up going to Camp Independence, I become friends with fellow campers and even my counselors. Going to camp Independence I was aware of the possibility that one of my friends could die. However, I never really thought much about one of one of my best friends passing away. Unfortunately, I grew complacent and lost a close friend from Camp Independence. The loss was hard and I hoped that I would never lose another friend from camp. Unfortunately, as a teen I lost another close friend from camp.

Loosing friends as a camper was hard. However, losing a friend as an adult is even harder to come to terms with. Shaw impacted so many lives for the good. I can only hope that I will be able to impact as many people in my lifetime.

I am so glad you were a counselor instead of me. You taught me how to be a better counselor and a better man. For that I hank you.

I love you brother. I will never forget you.

Wills

I met Shaw at Camp Independence this year, and I was shocked to learn that it was his first year, as he was one of the kindest, most outgoing, positive, and confident people at camp. He carried himself as one who had been volunteering for many years. I did not know him well, but my week at Camp Independence was made brighter by his presence. I never saw him without a smile on his face. It breaks my heart knowing that he will not be there at camp with us next year.

I am thankful to have known Shaw for the time that I did. He made me laugh, he taught me to not take things so seriously, he encouraged me to try new things and step outside of my bubble. He never met a stranger and it seemed everyone was his best friend. His life was an inspiration, but that word doesn't seem big enough for all that Shaw gave to us during his time here. I miss him dearly, and I take a small comfort in seeing his far-reaching impact on so many people.

I was like let me go talk to him too I don't want to be left out. And sure enough this guy's was a people magnet. As soon as you got in his presence you couldn't get away. Shaw was in my office on Tuesday morning just before lunch. He caught me up on his internship this summer at Piedmont Healthcare. He had come to some clarity about vocational paths. We talked about movies and Game of Thornes. In his typical fashion, he was so engaging and we planned for lunch in a couple of weeks and were going to see some movies together this fall. Shaw was the type student that makes teaching worthwhile. I am devastated at this loss. Praying for your family. I can only imagine what you all are going through.

I'm heartbroken by this news. I met Shaw at Camp Independence and we bonded over our challenging task of keeping an eye on our wandering campers. We also spoke a lot about our joint interest in health care and public health administration. Shaw was strong, smart, kind, and witty. Although I only new him for that week, I felt like we've been friends for years. He will be deeply missed and often thought of. I'll keep him, his family, and his friends--including us camp friends--in my thoughts and prayers.
