Coy Edmon Skaggs

March 20, 1923 ~ May 17, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old


Coy Skaggs quietly left his earthly home and entered into eternal peace with his Lord and Savior on May 17, 2017.  Coy was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky where he lived and worked on the family farm.  After completing high school he moved to Louisville for further schooling and employment before joining the Army during World War II.  Coy enjoyed his service in the European theater and achieved the rank of First Sergeant prior to his discharge at the end of the war.

He moved back to Louisville, KY and married Naomi Elizabeth Maffett of Elizabethtown, KY.  Coy would go on to spend over 40 years in the poultry industry in Executive Management positions.  His work took him to Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and then back to Georgia. 

Coy was very involved in Church and Community.  He served as Chairman of the Deacons and Finance Committee Chairman among other roles at First Baptist Church of Gainesville, GA.  Also in Gainesville, he served as Chairman of the Community Chest   and President and Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club.

Coy and Naomi were exemplary parents and were honored to have their family selected as finalist for the Family of the Year for the State of Georgia in 1963.

Coy is survived by his children, Louie Skaggs (Rita) of Reynolds Plantation, GA, Larry Skaggs (Jane) of Signal Mountain, TN, Linda Sue Taunton (Stephen) of Forsyth, GA, and LeAnn Morton (Clayton) of Wilmington, DE; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Music Program, First Baptist Church, 751 Green Street NW, Gainesville, Georgia or the Rock Springs Clinic, 211 Rock Springs Road, Milner, GA 30257.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 20 at 11:00 A.M., at the Good Shepherd Chapel, located at the entrance to the Banquet Hall, First Baptist Church of Gainesville, GA.  The family will receive friends preceding the service at 10:30.  Following the memorial service a private interment service for the family will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery.
