We have cared for many patients , but very few have touched our lives they way Shaw did. While his death is tragic, his life was inspiring.

My heart goes out to all of Shaw's family at this terribly hard time. Thank you for sharing your sweet son with us at CHOA. He was always an absolute joy to care for and inspired so many. Although it will be hard to understand why this happened to such a phenomenal guy, the Carter family is lucky to have a very special guardian angel.

Shaw touched the lives of so many. He was a gift to this world and I count myself as one of the fortunate to have crossed paths with him. I'm so grateful that he was able to volunteer at our pediatric transplant camp a few weeks ago. I watched him interact with those kids and witnessed his compassion, humor, and example of living life to the fullest and giving back to others. I pray for comfort and peace for his family and friends. Thanks for sharing him with us.

I would like to offer my personal condolences to your family. I hope that you will be able find comfort in God’s promise at Job 14:14 and 15 “If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands.” Your family are in my prayers and I am deeply sorry for your loss.

From the moment I met Shaw, I knew he was special. He was so personable, outgoing, and truly cared for others. While he was new at camp this summer, you would never have been able to tell. He had a gift for making people feel known and cared for. I grieve this loss with you and while I only knew Shaw for a short time, I am better for it. My deepest sympathy to you all.

An angel gots his wings and I'm sure Shaw is already sharing his smile to those he is meeting in his journey home. I know there is an empty space in your hearts but I hope knowing others care will help during this time of immense sadness. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

We are so sad to hear of Shaw's passing this week. A couple of years ago, our son Bronco was trying to bail out of the hospital while waiting on his heart transplant. The most amazing young man showed up in our lives, and Bronco will tell you that Shaw gave him courage to stay the course through sharing his personal experience. We are grateful that God put Shaw in our family's path. We pray for peace beyond all understanding for the Carter family.

I'm heartbroken by this news. I met Shaw at Camp Independence and we bonded over our challenging task of keeping an eye on our wandering campers. We also spoke a lot about our joint interest in health care and public health administration. Shaw was strong, smart, kind, and witty. Although I only new him for that week, I felt like we've been friends for years. He will be deeply missed and often thought of. I'll keep him, his family, and his friends--including us camp friends--in my thoughts and prayers.

Shaw was in my office on Tuesday morning just before lunch. He caught me up on his internship this summer at Piedmont Healthcare. He had come to some clarity about vocational paths. We talked about movies and Game of Thornes. In his typical fashion, he was so engaging and we planned for lunch in a couple of weeks and were going to see some movies together this fall. Shaw was the type student that makes teaching worthwhile. I am devastated at this loss. Praying for your family. I can only imagine what you all are going through.

I met Shaw at camp this year. Now I've been going to camp for years so I know several people there. But on the first night that we arrived I see this new guy and he seems like he knows everybody. I was like let me go talk to him too I don't want to be left out. And sure enough this guy's was a people magnet. As soon as you got in his presence you couldn't get away. What a truly exceptional young man that provided light to all he came in contact with.

I am thankful to have known Shaw for the time that I did. He made me laugh, he taught me to not take things so seriously, he encouraged me to try new things and step outside of my bubble. He never met a stranger and it seemed everyone was his best friend. His life was an inspiration, but that word doesn't seem big enough for all that Shaw gave to us during his time here. I miss him dearly, and I take a small comfort in seeing his far-reaching impact on so many people.

I met Shaw at Camp Independence this year, and I was shocked to learn that it was his first year, as he was one of the kindest, most outgoing, positive, and confident people at camp. He carried himself as one who had been volunteering for many years. I did not know him well, but my week at Camp Independence was made brighter by his presence. I never saw him without a smile on his face. It breaks my heart knowing that he will not be there at camp with us next year.

This summer I was a day helper at Camp Independence. While I was happy to be returning for my 14th summer at Camp Independence, I was sort of sad that I was not going to be a cabin counselor. Regardless, I wasn’t going to let my disappointment tarnish what was going to be a great week of camp. When I got to camp was the first time I met Shaw. From the second I met Shaw, I knew that Cabin 21 would be in good hands. Shaw was one of those counselors that set an example of leadership to the other counselors and volunteers. While I was impressed with Shaw’s leadership abilities, what impressed me the most was the love he showed for all the campers. Shaw treated the campers as if they were his own children. It didn’t matter what happened during the day at camp, Shaw never quit and he never lost his drive to be the best counselor he could be.

Growing up going to Camp Independence, I become friends with fellow campers and even my counselors. Going to camp Independence I was aware of the possibility that one of my friends could die. However, I never really thought much about one of one of my best friends passing away. Unfortunately, I grew complacent and lost a close friend from Camp Independence. The loss was hard and I hoped that I would never lose another friend from camp. Unfortunately, as a teen I lost another close friend from camp.

Loosing friends as a camper was hard. However, losing a friend as an adult is even harder to come to terms with. Shaw impacted so many lives for the good. I can only hope that I will be able to impact as many people in my lifetime.

I am so glad you were a counselor instead of me. You taught me how to be a better counselor and a better man. For that I hank you.

I love you brother. I will never forget you.

To the family and friends of Shaw Carter, while I don't know the family personally, I wanted to express my deep condolences for the loss of your loved one. I pray that these thoughts from the Holy Bible brings you comfort. Ezekiel 18: 32 says “‘I do not take any pleasure in the death of anyone,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.’” This scripture helps to appreciate that it pains God when we die. That's why he promises a resurrection when his son Jesus Christ said in John 5:28,29  "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out...".
I pray that your faith in God and his promises continue to bring you comfort. Continue to learn the truth about God and look forward to the promises he has made to you.
