Charles Kenneth Bradley of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 90.

Charles was born in Palmetto, GA on January 21, 1936, to Grace and Otto Bradley. He attended Avondale High School, Truett-McConnell College, Emory University, and the Medical College of Georgia, where he received his medical degree in 1962. He was then called to serve his country and joined the US Navy in July 1962 as a flight surgeon. Once fully trained at USN Flight Surgeon’s School in Pensacola, FL, Charles served tours in Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. After returning from service, Charles continued to pursue his medical specialty while working at the USN Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.  He completed his Postgraduate Residency in Ophthalmology in 1970 at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA.

Charles subsequently moved to Gainesville, GA to set up his private practice while continuing to serve and contribute to our nation’s military in a reserve role in the Army Medical Corps for the 117th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH). Charles maintained an attitude of service for his entire life by providing medical services to those in need, becoming Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Emory University teaching residents monthly at Grady Memorial Hospital for decades, serving as a volunteer faculty member in training new residents at VA hospitals for 25 years, teaching Advanced Ophthalmologic Technique at the University of South Carolina, Charleston. Most notably, Charles was chosen to serve on various surgical expeditions to Guyana, South Vietnam, and Romania with Surgical Eye Expeditions Int. and Kyrgyzstan Russia with Project Orbis, all to provide various eye surgeries to those in need of medical care. He also volunteered at Good News Clinic after he retired from private practice.

He further displayed his commitment to serve as a member of the vestry and choir at Grace Episcopal Church. Charles’s love and interests were wide and varied. He loved horses and was an accomplished equestrian. Charles spent many years riding the countryside on traditional-style ‘fox hunt’ adventures. He was passionate about golf, was an avid reader, and ever the source of encouragement and support for others. His infectious spirit and booming laughter left an indelible impression on all those he met.

Charles is survived by his wife, Jane Beckett Bradley; his daughters Rebecca Fretty (Steve Fretty) and Lydia Meek (Tim Meek); son John Bradley; two stepsons, Ramsay Sims (Mary Byrd) and Grant Sims; and nine grandchildren, Forest Bradley, Dylan Bradley, Danielle Bradley, Elizabeth Fretty, Jackson Fretty, Melissa Sims, Holly Sims, Amelia Sims and Hazel Sims. He was proceeded in death by his sister Katie Virginia Johnson.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Gainesville, GA on Friday July, 17 at 2pm.
