Dorothy Hamil Obituary

Dorothy Thompson Hamil, lovingly known as “Randy,” passed away on December 18, 2025, at Lanier Village Estates, surrounded by her family. She was 87 years old.

Randy was born on October 21, 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida, to John and Dorothy Thompson. She excelled academically and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from North Georgia College, graduating summa cum laude.

She was married for 66 years to her college sweetheart and the love of her life, Richard C. Hamil. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and community. Randy was a devoted mother to her sons, Tim Hamil (Kay) and Mike Hamil (Beth), and a proud grandmother to Andrew Hamil (Holly), Katherine Halley (Jake), Tanner Hamil (Sarah), Elizabeth Lowman (Lake), and Matthew Hamil (Kalia). She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Cooper, Tucker, and Lily.

Randy was preceded in death by her parents, John G. and Dorothy Thompson, and her sister, Mary Lowe Leeke.

Throughout her life, Randy was deeply involved in her children’s activities and her community. She served as President of the PTA, was an active member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and supported education through her involvement with the North Georgia Foundation, which provides scholarships for nontraditional female students.

Randy was a gifted fiber artist and found great joy in creative pursuits such as making little quilts, primitive hooked rugs, cross-stitch, and knitting. Her warmth, humor, and playful spirit earned her the affectionate nickname “Silly Fra” from her grandchildren—a name that perfectly reflected the joy she brought into their lives.

A funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (600 S. Enota Drive NE, Gainesville, GA 30501) on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. A private family burial will take place at Georgia National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Support Community East Tennessee, 6204 Baum Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919, or online at www.CancerSupportET.org.

Randy will be remembered for her love of family, her generous heart, her creative spirit, and the lasting impact she made on all who knew her.
