Edward “Ed” Allen Dewey, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Born in 1932, Ed grew up in Willoughby, Ohio, the youngest son of Arthur M and Alice Virginia (Kellberg) Dewey. As a young man, he attended Wesleyan University and later earned his MBA from Harvard University.  During that time, he also served as a purser in the Navy, sailing to Antarctica.

Early in Ed’s professional life, he worked in the phosphate financing industry in Lakeland, where he raised two children with his first wife Nancy. In 1974, he met Joyce Knight Dewey, who became his beloved partner, steadfast companion, and wife for more than fifty years.

Together, Ed and Joyce built a rich and meaningful life rooted in faith, service, family, travel, and community. They later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Ed worked for Bechtel Corporation. During their years in California, they were members of St John's Episcopal Church in Ross, California.

In retirement, Ed and Joyce settled in Big Canoe, Georgia, where they became devoted parishioners of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family. Ed served the church faithfully, by helping to guide its building efforts. He was also deeply committed to serving the wider community as Chairman of the Board of the Good Samaritan Health & Wellness Center in Pickens County and was an active member of Sons of the American Revolution.

Ed will be remembered as a thoughtful and quietly generous man of deep intellect and faith. A formidable poker player and enthusiastic card shark, he could speak with equal ease about Hegel, travel, or family stories. He was passionate about golf, growing moonflowers, and his orange tabby cat, Heidi. He treasured his family, his church, and the friendships he cultivated throughout his life.

In the last decade of his life, he and Joyce moved to Gainesville where they built another community of treasured friends and faith at Lanier Village Estates (LVE) and Grace Espiscopal Church. We are grateful to the staff of LVE and WillowBrooke for their steadfast care of Ed as his health declined.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Robert Dewey (Mary) of Spokane, Washington.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Knight Dewey; his daughter, Anne Goodnow (Carl); his son, Jeff Dewey (Megan); his cherished grandchildren, Lance Goodnow and Flora Dewey; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

His life was marked by quiet wisdom, steady kindness, and faithful service, a legacy that will endure in all who knew and loved him. 

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family at 202 Griffith Road, Jasper, GA 30143 on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
