Elizabeth Ellard Obituary

Elizabeth Snowden Ellard, of Gainesville, Georgia, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. She was 95.

She was raised in Monroeville, Alabama, the daughter of Raymond Carl (R.C.) and Willie Dale Snowden. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama, kept in touch with fellow members of the university’s Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and remained a lifelong Bama fan (Roll Tide).

She enjoyed conversing, always showing interest in the other person, and making and maintaining friendships. She loved to read and learn, for example, through Brenau University’s BULLI programs. She often shared fruits of her labors with her children, sending each of them manila envelopes filled with annotated photocopies and clippings. She was kind, gracious, calm, warm, and cheerful and liked to laugh. She was a follower of Jesus Christ, for many years as a member of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Georgia, and, while a resident of WillowBrooke Court at Lanier Village Estates, as a member of fellowship groups there.

Her children thank the personnel of WillowBrooke Court, including the nurses, nursing assistants, and chaplains (including Duke Walker), for their care for her, and thank everyone who visited her there.

Mrs. Ellard was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, P. Martin Ellard, as well as by her parents and her sister, Louise Snowden Rice of Birmingham, Alabama. Survivors include her son, Daniel Pope Ellard and his wife, Meredith (Muffy) of Bettendorf, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Snowden Ellard, Washington, D.C.; son, William Martin (Bill) Ellard and his wife, Mary-Elizabeth, Atlanta, Georgia; grandson Garrett Snowden Ellard and his wife, Allysa, North Liberty, Iowa; grandson Schaffer McKay Ellard, North Liberty, Iowa; great granddaughter, Payson JoAnn Ellard, and great grandson, Connor Lee Ellard, each of North Liberty, Iowa; and her sister’s children, Dale Rice Naylor (Jim) of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Grantland Rice III (Jan) of Birmingham, Alabama.

Services have not yet been scheduled. Interment will be next to the grave of her husband in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.
