Eva Thekla (Eisenhut) Couch

Eva Thekla Couch, 96, of Gainesville passed away Monday, June 17, 2024.  A World War II survivor and lifelong resident of Gainesville, GA, Eva is survived by her two children, Gilda Walsh and Wendell Couch; her two sisters, Heidi Becker and Ingrid Bauer.

sister-in-law Virginia Little; her 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and family friends.

Eva Couch was born in Apolda, East Germany, the oldest of three sisters.  After World War II Eva was captured by Russian soldiers while trying to sneak food back to her family.  Her tenacity and will to survive were demonstrated in her harrowing escape and the subsequent months of travel on foot to find food and safety.  Eva found safety when she met her beloved husband, John B. Couch, who was serving in the U.S. Army.

Relocating to Gainesville, GA, Eva quickly became a cherished fixture in her community. Known for her love, laughter, and unwavering service to others, she dedicated her life to her church, her family and grandchildren, and her beloved cats. Eva's spirit of determination was evident in her daily routines, whether she was cutting grass or walking at Lakeshore Mall, activities she enjoyed well into her 80s.

Eva passed away at the remarkable age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength. Having bid farewell to her husband John in 2008, her family and friends find solace in the thought of their now heavenly reunion. If Heaven has a mall, then one can imagine Eva and John walking there together hand-in-hand, making plans to visit their grandchildren.
