Fannie Black Obituary

Fannie Opal Jenkins Black was born on August 5, 1936, to Andrew Conrad Jenkins and Katie Pearl Jenkins in Gainesville, Georgia. She departed this life to be with Christ on April 10, 2024, at the age of eighty-seven.

A Funeral service will be held at 4 pm Saturday April 13, 2024 at the Little Davenport Chapel.  Larry Farlow and Ben Hildebrant will officiate with interment to follow in the Corinth Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 pm till the funeral hour on Saturday.

Fannie lived in Gainesville for most of her life and loved the people and places of Hall County. She graduated from Sardis High School second in her class in 1954 and attended Brenau College for one year on a full scholarship. She then began serving the citizens of Georgia as an employee of the Game and Fish Division of the Department of Natural Resources, where she worked for over thirty years, retiring in 1988.

On Valentine’s Day 1960, she married James “Buddy” Black and was a faithful and loving wife to him until his death in 2015.

In addition to her husband and parents, Fannie was preceded in death by nine siblings, Andrew Jenkins, James Jenkins, Johnny Jenkins, Rufus Jenkins, Eugene Jenkins, Alice Little, Connice Martin, Etheleen Hooper, and Mary Edith Gillespie.

Fannie is survived by her daughters Susan Black Farlow and Julie Black Walls as well as her sons-in-law Larry Farlow and Mark Walls, her sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Harold Thompson and numerous nieces and nephews.

One of the joys of Fannie’s life was to be “Nanny” to her five grandchildren (and one grandson-in-law), Emily & Griffin VerSteeg of Brooklyn, NY, Will Farlow of Akron, OH, Jim Farlow of John’s Creek, GA, Allison Walls of New Orleans, LA, and Jonathan Walls of Atlanta, GA. She loved them well and deeply.

All of us will miss her greatly but are comforted with the knowledge that she is with the Lord and that one day those of us in Christ will see her again.

"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints." - Psalm 116:15
