It is with deep sadness that we announce Fletcher Pless Miller passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday April 14th, 2026. Fletcher faced numerous health challenges over the last ten years, including two heart attacks and stomach cancer, which he overcame. In the last two years he had been treated for a recurrence of cancer. During all this time Fletcher faced these adversities with grace, fortitude and courage. He was an inspiration to many people.
Fletcher was born in Gainesville on March 22nd, 1947, and was a lifetime resident. He was a 1965 graduate of Gainesville High School and was a proud Red Elephant. He graduated from Truett McConnell College and attended the University of Georgia. Fletcher had a very successful career in retail as a haberdasher, working as a buyer and manager at Belk for many years and finishing his career at Nordstrom as a personal shopper. He had a loyal following of customers, all of whom considered him a friend. He, in turn, cherished the many friends and relationships that he made during his career.
Christian faith was an extremely important part of Fletcher’s life. Church attendance was always a high priority. He served as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville. Fletcher also enjoyed sacred choral music and enjoyed singing. His bass voice graced numerous church choirs, most recently the Chancel Choir of Gainesville First United Methodist Church. He also sang in the Gainesville Chorale and the Michael O’Neal Singers.
Fletcher took pleasure in playing games, especially word games and card games. He was an avid bridge player with several standing bridge gatherings with friends and family. Fletcher not only enjoyed the competition but also enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow players. Family holiday gatherings typically included a good game of bridge.
Most people knew Fletcher by his highly developed sense of humor and his infectious laugh. A devoted observer of human nature, he could always see the comical side of everyday occurrences. He would point out the amusing nature of many things he observed. Fletcher loved to laugh and make others laugh! The reason that we feel such a profound loss is because we had such a profound blessing in Fletcher.
Fletcher loved his family and large circle of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Andrew O. Miller and Lessie Pless Miller Brewer and niece Janet Pierce and brother-in-law Rueben Pierce.
Fletcher is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Gina Wilson Miller, his sister Glenda Pierce, and his brothers Wayne Miller and Larry Miller. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Doug and Cathy Wilson of Kannapolis, North Carolina. Survivors also include his nephew Chad Pierce (Ani), his nephew Matt Miller (Rachel), his niece Celena Knapp (Brett), his nephew Andy Miller (Bonnie Oliver), his niece Wendy Montgomery (Bob), his niece Natalie Upright (Jason) of Salisbury, North Carolina, his niece Emily Wilson of Charleston, South Carolina and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.
