Greta Carter Obituary

Greta Bye Carter, 92, passed away Tuesday, January 5th at Manor Lake Memory Care in Gainesville, Georgia.

An open service will be held Saturday, January 9th at 1:00 pm, at the Chapel at Little & Davenport Funeral Home.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic social distancing will need to be observed for everyone's health and safety and mask are to be worn.

Born in Old Buckenham, England, Greta lived in Norfolk until she met a young airman during a dance hosted in her village for US servicemen during World War II.  Valdosta native Mark Carter became her favorite dance partner for the duration of his deployment, and after the war they continued their correspondence courtship.  It wasn't until after the war that he returned to the U.K. to request her hand.  They married in England and then moved to the states where Greta became a naturalized citizen and pursued a degree alongside Mark at the University of Georgia, all while raising 3 small children. After school, they settled in Gainesville, where with their children they went on to own and operate Carter's Nursery and Landscaping for over 30 years.

Prior to opening the nursery, many will fondly remember Greta as the librarian at Gainesville High School.  Greta's devotion to education was best reflected by her willingness to share her gifts with anyone interested in learning.  Whether sharing her knowledge gained as a lifetime, avid knitter, or introducing someone to the joys of playing bridge for the first time, Greta's enthusiasm for teaching enriched the lives of everyone she met.  One of her particular joys was ballroom dancing, and she never missed an opportunity to encourage others to celebrate life by joining the dance.

Greta's vibrant and determined personality was also reflected in her work with multiple charitable organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the Ladies Auxiliary of the B.P. O.E.  She loved to travel and made it her life's pursuit to visit as many areas of the globe as possible.  She was beloved by her family, her students and by the many customers she encountered throughout the years.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Hiram Mark Carter, son Arthur Mark Carter and daughter Janice Carter Dubnik.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret Carter Jones, daughter-in-law Kathy Skarda Carter, grandchildren Carla Jones Walker and husband Spencer, Katherine Carter Dwozan and husband Charlie, and Carmen Dubnik Morris and husband Daniel, Chadwick Mark Carter and wife Angie, Christopher Blake Carter and fiancé Hana Brown, and Brian Eugene Dubnik, and great-grandchildren Spencer P. Walker Jr., Annabel Lee Walker, Heidi Kazuko Carter, and Adalyn Paige Dwozan.
