Helen Gean (Hughes) Thrasher, 93, of Gainesville passed away February 3, 2026, in Peachtree City, Georgia.
Gean was born in Nellysford, Virginia, to John W. and Mary D. Hughes and spent all of her youth there. At age 19 she married and traveled with two babies to England where she lived with her husband while he served in the Air Force. Gean returned to the United States after a few years and worked in Washington, D.C. before moving with her two young daughters to Del Rio, Texas. Eventually she met and married a young Border Patrol agent, Clyde E. Thrasher.
Gean and Clyde moved to Toronto, Canada and then to Hamburg, New York, where they had a son, Clyde Edwin Thrasher. From there, their growing family moved to Maryland and finally to Gainesville, Georgia where they spent the next 40+ years.
Gean loved gardening, drawing, and “dressing to the nines.” She certainly left her mark wherever she went. She loved politics.
Gean was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde E. Thrasher. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Joanne and Jerry Olin of Peachtree City, Georgia; Judy and Rick Dunn of Bartonville, Texas; Ed Thrasher; and Bob Wood. Gean is also survived by four grandchildren, Christina Fisher, Julia Thrasher, John Dunn, and Austin Dunn, and six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home in Gainesville, Georgia. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. A private family interment will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Gean’s memory to Southern Grace Hospice Foundation, 80 Chandler Road, McDonough, GA 30253, or to a charity of your choice.
