John Edmund Barbour was born at Fort Bragg, NC, in March of 1947. He grew up in Fayetteville, NC. He attended North Carolina State University, before serving in the US Navy for 3 years. John then attended Western Carolina University to study Outdoor Recreation. With a great love for the outdoors, John began working at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in 1973 and retired in 1998 as VP of Retail. During his tenure there, he gave many young entrepreneurs their start, by agreeing to sell their wares. In 1998 he moved to Dunedin, Florida and ran a sea kayaking company. While starting a family in Gainesville, FL with his then wife, Stacey, he directed the building of one of the first indoor climbing walls in the area, worked at an orange grove and at Wild Birds Unlimited. He attended the United Church of Gainesville. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors. He was an accomplished sportsman enjoying target shooting, archery, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, kayaking & rock climbing his whole life.
John spent the last few years in Lawrenceville & Buford GA. He passed away peacefully on May 5th at the age of 77. He is survived by his two sons, John William Barbour Hoffman & Joseph Owen Barbour Hoffman. His sister Anita Jean (Phil) Bosserman, his niece Elizabeth Bosserman (Niles) Gray & nephew Christopher Bosserman, his former wife Stacey Hoffman, his sister-in-law Stephanie Ziobrowski & numerous cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Barbour & Nina Saunders Barbour and his brother Robert David Barbour.
