John Bowman Nelson Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Bowman Nelson, who left this world on January 18, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on September 4, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, John and his sister LeeVona were raised on a farm by parents Elmer and Juneyea Nelson.

John is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Sylvia Nelson; his daughter Michelle Nelson (Pam Dooley); his son Michel Nelson and his grandson Victor “Webb” Nelson (Mother, Beth Nelson). He is also survived by his sister, LeeVona Blair, and his niece and nephew, Kimberly and Eric Blair.

A man of great intellect and passion, John made significant contributions to his community, both in his personal and professional life. He was a proud Eagle Scout, a member of the English Masonic Lodge, and a Roman Catholic. John was also a brother in the Acacia fraternity and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He held a BS in electrical engineering from the Missouri School of Mines, a BS in education from the University of Missouri Kansas City and a master’s degree from Central Michigan University. His commitment to education was exemplified in his career as a science teacher, college professor, corporate trainer, and industrial educator. Those who knew him will remember his exceptional ability to teach and inspire.

John had many passions outside of his career. He was an avid amateur radio operator, a skilled watercolor artist, and an enthusiastic boater. He had a deep love for history, particularly ancient Greek and Roman, which he shared with his grandson Webb. One of his most cherished memories was the time he and Sylvia spent living in England, where they resided for nearly ten years. During this time, they enjoyed cycling through the countryside and traveling extensively throughout Europe—a period of his life that he reminisced about fondly.

John's family and friends knew him as a man of integrity, kindness, and warmth. He had a wonderful sense of humor that made him a joy to be around.  He will be greatly missed, but his love, wisdom, and the many lessons he shared will remain in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
