A celebration of life for Larry Edward Merritt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Gainesville, Georgia. Larry passed away at his residence on January 18, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.
A lifelong resident of Hall County, Larry was the owner of M&M and Associates Plumbing Company for 50 years. A mentor by nature, he found great joy in sharing his knowledge and experience, teaching at Gwinnett Technical College for 21 years. Larry previously served as president of the State Plumbing and Heating Association and as a member of the State Board of Backflow Prevention.
Larry was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Gainesville, where he served as a deacon and Stephen Minister, faithfully supporting and caring for members of the church community, including the Kindred Spirits Sunday School class.
Larry’s legacy lives on through his beloved family: his wife of 50 years, Marie Hawkins Merritt, of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Merilynn and Jordan Woodfin, of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Megan Merritt-Garza and Jason Garza, of Decatur; son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Abby Merritt, of Gainesville; godson and wife, Bo and Kate Wren; grandchildren Evelyn and Emmie Woodfin and Maylee and Marlowe Merritt, all of Gainesville; sisters Carolyn Jarrard (Randy) and Millie Merritt; brother John Merritt (Katey); sister-in-law Linda Merritt; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Marguerite Merritt; sister Kathy Merritt; and brothers Allen Merritt and Dr. Gary Merritt.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church of Gainesville for the Stephen Ministry or North Georgia Works of Gainesville. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Good Shepherd Lobby at First Baptist Church.
