Mary Edith (Couch) Carnes

Mary Edith Couch Carnes, 93, of Braselton Georgia, entered eternal rest May 7th, 2023, after a brief decline. 

Mary Carnes was born March 28th, 1930, in Hall County Georgia. She graduated Murrayville School in 1946, and then attended Terrell’s Beauty School on the square in Gainesville, Georgia.  After school, she worked as a beautician, and did hair for opera singers and performers such as Lena Horne and Roberta Peters, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta Georgia.  Atlanta is also where she would wed her husband Herbert Cecil Carnes Sr., and have her children, Alicia, Herbie, Lynn, and Carol. She later relocated back to Hall County and did hair at home, while also working at her sister's store, Chestatee Grocery, along with making quilts at the Chestatee Quilting Bee. 

Mary was one of the founding members of Kilough Baptist Church back in the 1960’s.  She loved her church family, and especially loved singing in the choir, and making her delicious hand pies or biscuits during Wednesday services or revivals.  She was very devout in the Baptist faith and would share her love for Jesus daily. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Cecil Carnes Sr., her father, Henry Woodland Grady Couch, her mother, Texie Cordelia Lee Couch, her sisters, Claudine Ledford, Lorene Underwood, and Juanita Garrett, her brother, Dean Couch, her son, Herbert Cecil Carnes Jr., and her daughter Alicia Burke. 

Mary Carnes is survived by children, Lynn Longino and Carol Alfrey, grandchildren, Kim McDonald, Scott Wiley, Maleea Carnes Small, Melinda Carnes and Melanie Carnes Anderson, great-grandchildren Heather Parra, Cortney McDonald, Jay Wiley, Alexa Carnes, Nathaniel March, Oliver March, and Maddox Anderson, great-great-grandchildren, Amaris Parra, Kellan Parra, Scarlett Parra, and Emberly Parra.

A memorial service will be held May 27th, 2023, at 3 P.M. at Harmony Baptist Church in Dawsonville Georgia.
