Robert Williams Obituary

Robert “Harry” Williams, age 90, was born September 25, 1933, in Gainesville, GA. and passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. He was raised in Gillsville, GA. during the Great Depression.

In 1939, the family moved to the outskirts of Avondale Estates. There he joined Avondale Baptist Church and was baptized at the age of 17.

In 1950, Harry graduated from Avondale High School.

He was a Korean War Veteran. He spent 13 ½ months in the “Iron Triangle” in North Korea. He served with the combat engineering battalion attached to the 2nd and 25th division.

Harry served over 30 years with the DeKalb County Police Department. During this time, he worked on the Homicide Squad and was promoted to Sargent and received a commendation for bravery. During this time Harry received a Bachelor of Science in law from John Marshall Law School.

In 1972, the State of Georgia passed a law that all police officers should be properly certified. Sargent Williams was assigned the task of establishing the 1st Police Academy that met Georgia requirements. The 1st Police Academy was started in June 1973. Later, he served establishing the implementation of the 911 system. Thereafter, he was assigned to automate all the Public Safety Records. He retired in 1990 and built his dream house on Lake Lanier, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Harry loved gospel hymns. He was an active member of Cool Springs Baptist Church, serving faithfully until his declining health.

Harry was blessed with a loving wife of 67 years, Martha Laquita Williams. They have 3 children, Sherry, Robby and Sandy; 5 grandkids; and 9 great grandkids; along with many other loving relatives and friends.

Harry was devoted to the word of God and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with all our family. Harry’s last days were filled with prayer and he ended his prayer with “Thank you Lord for a wonderful Journey”.
