Vladimir Harris Obituary

Vladimir “Val” Harris, age 98, passed away peacefully at Willowbrooke Court at Lanier Village Estates in
Gainesville, GA on June 16, 2022. He was born on September 16, 1923 to the late Theodore and Anna
Harris in Simpson, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Eleanor, his brothers, Joseph,
William, Peter, and Aleck, and his sisters, Anna, Olga, Julia, and Mary. Val and Eleanor were married 65
years.

He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Army ground force landing in France 60 days after
D-day when he was 20 years old. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he attended Keystone
College and graduated from Lehigh University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He joined Standard
Oil of Indiana, which later became Amoco, and is now known as BP.

He spent a few years as a Project Engineer in design and construction of petroleum and chemical
processing units traveling the US extensively with his wife, Eleanor. He held various managerial
positions in manufacturing. He was assigned to a project in Italy for three years. After returning from
Italy, he was assigned to Spain for four years as Managing Director of a joint venture with a Spanish
petroleum company.

He retired from Amoco in 1986, after 34 years, when he held the position as Manager of Engineering.
During the 28 years in retirement in River Hills, Lake Wylie, SC, he served on the Marina Board of
Directors and was President of the River Hills Country Club for two years. He was a member of the River
Hills Community Church. He was an avid golfer, shooting his age or better many times.

He was instrumental in starting Mayday, a non-profit organization to help the homeless and needy
children. Money was raised by golfers and sponsors in golf tournaments at River Hills Country Club
every year. It still continues every year.

Val and Eleanor moved to Lanier Village Estates (LVE) in Gainesville, GA, in January 2014, a wonderful
community with total care. Val was a member of the LVE Barber Shoppers, a singing group at LVE, and a
volunteer for various activities at LVE. Val also published a book when he was 94-years old. YOU CAN
